Safety Notice

VENUS BAY /PORT KENNY

LOCALLY AVAILABLE 24/7 ADELAIDE MONITORED VHF MARINE EMERGENCY RADIO SERVICE IS ON CH 16 and supplementary CH 67 via equipment on Government Radio Network towers at Elliston’s Mt Bramfield and Streaky Bay’s Gibson Peninsula. However in some areas both inside and outside of the bay’s, that signal is marginal due from terrain shadowing, which is one of the supporting reasons for establishing a local monitoring station.

LOCAL VMR VENUS BAY STATION DAYLIGHT HOURS MARINE VHF RADIO SERVICE: on VHF Ch 16 plus VHF Repeater channels 81 and 82, by Rob and Ruth Gregor who are SES and SAAS volunteers.

Their call-sign is VMR Venus Bay.

Because the Venus Bay/Port Kenny area has limited coverage for mobile phones and VHF/UHF radio services, the Streaky Bay SES has been instrumental in establishing this site as an ancillary SES communications base and a local VHF marine monitoring service for emergency/urgent calls.

REGARDING VMR VENUS BAY STATION SERVICE: *** From time to time, they need to use low powered handheld transceivers in their monitoring, with reception range then limited to only within the bay itself.

VMR Venus Bay primarily monitors for urgent or emergency calls and presently the hours are 8.00AM to 8.30PM. They can provide a signal check, but do not offer a regular voyage booking/tracking service within the Bay, unless that is agreed by prior arrangement on 0400 793 758 or by e-mail to robgregor2015@gmail.com. It is expected that such a service can be made available on request, to those who are travelling offshore or to individuals and clubs who are using hand held transceivers.

UHF CB RADIO MONITORING SERVICES VENUS BAY AREA. These are usually available by the Venus Bay Caravan Park (Ch 32) and the Port Kenny Caravan Park (Ch 13) during business hours.
